August and September

I had planned on posting weekly of our home school progress but I have realized that homeschooling a second grader keeps me busy! :) we are reading very well now (second/third grade books)
We have a small library her at home.....
But she loves her weekly trips to our local library to get her three books each week :)

Math comes very easy she has addition down very well with subtraction coming in a close second. We will start memorizing multiplication tables in November.

We were having a little trouble with her spelling test each week but that has changed since we were lucky enough to find a Crofton high temp still in the box for $10 at a yard sale. We now laminate her spelling words each week. With using the dry erase markers on the cards each day this seems to help her memorize better and also helps with her handwriting. We cut each card to 3X4 and write the spelling word on front (print) with the other side cursive so when we start cursive we can go back to these words to practice her writing on. Since she is writing on each card and wiping it off daily to her it is more of a game and the memorizing has become easy and her handwriting better, its a win win. :)

We are studying the US map now, learning when each state came into the union,  its placement on the map, the capital and state bird. This is a project we are working on when we are running a little ahead of our core studies.

I am so glad we decided to turn the small bedroom into a school room it has made all the difference! We colored each wall a different bright color with the posters at eye level that correlates with our studies for that month and I lay out our studies the night before so when we walk into our room its "start school" :)

With fall we have started a leaf book and this has given us a good reason to walk around the farm and study other things at the same time.....like what birds are in our area or watching the squirrels get ready for winter etc

We also have started a portfolio for second grade 2013/2014. The beginning of each week I add one of her papers from each core subject and again at the end of the week along with her test scores, spelling test etc.
We are learning how to better do things or what is more comfortable to us as we go along. I have two family members that are teachers, one is a second grade teacher with the other being a fourth so if we get off the path they get us back on again. I have had more fun than I realized could be possible with homeschooling, I am looking forward to our learning experiences together. :)

This blog will be all about our home school journey beginning in August, 2013.  My blog will stay at country life, it contains our everyday life and what is going on at the farm. Have a great day
